Technology Development Engineer – Dynamic Single Molecule

Full-Time Position


As a Technology Development Engineer, you contribute to the technology development projects of the dynamic single-molecule (DSM) business unit at LUMICKS. You will work on new features of the current instruments C-Trap® and m-Trap®, future prototypes, and products, and you will have the unique opportunity to grow the products to their full potential. 

You will work closely with other Technology Development Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Software Developers, the Product Manager, and the System Architect. Externally you will coordinate co-development projects with partners in both academics and industry.

What are my tasks & responsibilities?

  • Design and implement next-generation LUMICKS instruments and C-TrapTM and m-TrapTM features.
  • Test and validate prototypes with experimental bench-test setups and on a system level.
  • Discover and detail out creative solutions to engineering challenges and assess the feasibility of novel technology.
  • Coordinate technology development projects with industry partners and selected customers.
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team with dedicated application engineers, software developers and interface with product management on the technology roadmap and product requirements.
  • Provide relevant technical documentation such as assembly and installation instructions, or user manuals.

What about my skills & competencies?

  • MSc with 2-3 years of working experience or PhD in (bio)physics or similar.
  • Experience and skills in (bio)physics or similar, as well as optical tweezers and/or experimental optical microscopy setups.
  • Experience in developing, building, testing, and applying complex optical experimental setups.
  • Experience with fluidics and electronics is advantageous.
  • Experience with modern programming environments such as Python or similar for experimental control and/or data analysis.
  • Managing development projects in a structured manner, keep relevant development documentation up to date.
  • Preferably ZEMAX or similar optical modeling / optical system design experience.
