Senior Application Scientist – Dynamic Single Molecule

Full-Time Position


The dynamic single-molecule (DSM) team at LUMICKS is working on enabling new technologies and possibilities in single-molecule experiments. To achieve this goal we are developing new workflows, applications, and assays that require application-based experiments within the DSM R&D team. You will work with our workflow application development team to perform state-of-the-art single-molecule experiments to validate new workflows & assays. You connect easily to academic scientists in different areas of fundamental biology through a clear understanding of their technical and application needs and are able to translate these needs into clear requirements for the products we develop in the DSM R&D team.

What are my tasks & responsibilities?

  • Define detailed user requirements and validate test plans for new products or R&D projects.
  • Review performance, software, and workflow requirements.
  • Design and execute experiments to generate high-quality data to validate user requirements.
  • Identify and establish strategic collaborations.
  • Improve current, or develop novel applications and assays, pushing the limits of the C-Trap applications.
  • Maintain a clear vision of innovations and new developments in the field of single-molecule science like DNA-protein interactions, protein unfolding, and cytoskeletal motors.
  • Analyze, present and display single-molecule data with set high-standards that can be used for outbound marketing.
  • Present state-of-the-art studies at professional conferences, author articles for scientific journals and popular press, as well as present posters.
  • Develop scientific outline and content for marketing materials like brochures, application notes, product datasheets, and poster or oral presentations.
  • Ensure scientific content of reach-out messages and marketing materials are sound.

What about my skills & competencies?

  • Extensive experience with single-molecule and biophysical techniques such as optical tweezers or fluorescence microscopy, in particular, with assay development.
  • Hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of single-molecule applications such as DNA-protein interactions, protein unfolding, or cytoskeletal motor assays.
  • A PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics or Applied Physics or similar discipline, or 5 years of experience in a relevant research environment.
  • High-level experience in single-molecule data analysis and programming in Python (or Matlab) on a scientific level.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent, enthusiastic, clear communication skills with a diverse audience are critical.
