R&D Director

Full-Time Position


As the R&D Director, you are responsible for leading the CA BU R&D organization while it grows and transitions from a small ~40 FTE team to >100 FTE multi-function matrix organization in the next few years. You will lead and build an R&D team that is committed to growing a revolutionary high-tech product portfolio that enables the analysis and sorting of immune cells based upon their binding strength to their target. This technology has a multitude of applications in drug discovery, development, QC for bioprocessing and in the clinical setting. You will directly manage the functional leads of the R&D team including hardware, electronics, and software engineers, system architects, and application developers (including chemists and immunologists). The R&D director will work cooperatively with the Director of Product Management, product team leaders, and program manager to ensure R&D resources align with strategic company goals.

What are my tasks & responsibilities?

  • Direct line manager of functional managers (e.g. engineering, software, etc) of full CA R&D organization.
  • Responsible for recruitment of skilled and engaged people that fit the company culture.
  • Ensure engagement and growth of R&D team members by defining and executing individual growth plans.
  • Work closely with the program manager to ensure successful implementation of R&D processes with the aim of delivering breakthrough innovation on time and on cost.
  • Ensure R&D resource plan (including recruitment, selection, and competence development)  aligns with strategic goals of the company and is successfully executed.
  • Work closely with product team leaders and program managers to allocate resources to different R&D projects.
  • Ensure R&D disciplines are aligned across multi-disciplinary teams in which day-to-day priorities are set.
  • Responsible for the quality of R&D work across different disciplines.

What about my skills & competencies?

  • Masters degree level education in engineering or relevant discipline. 
  • 10-15 + years of  R&D Management experience.
  • Strong track record of leading larger cross (>50 FTE) functional teams.
  • Life science (capital) tools, or other high-tech capital equipment for scientific or medical applications.
  • International experience.
  • A seasoned and talented leader with demonstrated ability to build and lead  R&D organizations.
  • Able to hire and inspire “A” players and develop employees with good coaching.
  • Recognized for treating people with respect.
  • Demonstrates efficiency of execution, flexibility, and adaptability
  • Integrity/honesty/approachable.
  • Strong drive to deliver on objectives quickly and effectively.
  • Organizational and planning skills.
  • Calm under pressure.
