Patent Agent

Full-Time Position


We have an exciting opportunity on the IP and patent team to tackle our ambitious and growing portfolio. LUMICKS is looking to expand in exciting areas of cellular avidity, immunology, cell therapeutics. We are seeking entrepreneurial, motivated, and experienced patent agents to play a primary role in the company’s strategic IP efforts worldwide. Patent agents are critical members in supporting LUMICKS’ cellular avidity business in connection with IP portfolio objectives.

Locations: The Netherlands, San Francisco, Boston, or remotely

What are my tasks & responsibilities?

  • Interacting with the CTO, R&D, Product Management, and Customer Success teams at all levels to identify patent-worthy inventions and secure patents on LUMICKS innovations.
  • Documenting inventions and providing hands-on direction and input to external patent attorneys. 
  • Drafting/reviewing a wide variety of documents, including patent applications and office action responses.
  • A strategic contributor to the drafting, filing, prosecution, and maintenance of LUMICKS’ worldwide patent portfolio.
  • The ability to contribute to global patent strategy.
  • A strategic contributor to IP due diligence, technology assessments, and FTO analyses in potential strategic transactions (including M&A, licensing, and financing).
  • Assisting CTO, General Counsel, and outside counsel on IP-related proceedings, challenges, disputes, and litigation.

What about my skills & competencies?

  • Admission to either bars of the European Patent Office or the United States Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Solid knowledge of global intellectual property laws & practices.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience in life sciences, biotechnology, or closely related patent areas with a strong preference for in-house experience.
  • Application and knowledge in any of the areas of immunology, proteomics, genomics, cell biology, microscopy, single-cell analysis, cell therapeutics, or diagnostics.
  • Assist in managing complex patent portfolios & strategies and developing commercially relevant patent assets.
  • Advanced degree (preferably a Ph.D.) in, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or similar; a strong technological aptitude for learning and working with a range of technologies; and a willingness to learn and engage with LUMICKS employees and outside counsel in other technology areas including microfluidics, instrumentation, application/workflow development, and software.
  • Excellent writing, communication, organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Self-directed and proactive, comfortable executing on multiple projects independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Experience managing outside counsel (preferably).
  • Large law firm experience (preferably).
