Acoustical/Vibration Engineer – Dynamic Single-Molecule

Full-Time Position


As an Acoustical/Vibration Engineer, you will contribute to our dynamic single-molecule (DSM) R&D team at LUMICKS. You will work on new features of the current instruments C-Trap® and m-Trap®, future prototypes and products, and you will have the unique opportunity to grow the products to their full potential.

You will work closely with our agile interdisciplinary engineering teams and applications scientists to develop state-of-the-art systems for single-molecule measurements. These instruments consist of fluidic, mechatronic, pneumatic, thermal, optical, and electrical sub-systems and play a critical role in the discovery of the molecular mechanisms of life. You will be responsible for optimizing our instruments to reduce the impact of noise and vibration on their performance and will contribute to hardware design, validation, and troubleshooting.

What are my tasks & responsibilities?

  • Lead the optimization of LUMICKS instruments to reduce the impact of (acoustic) noise and vibrations on their performance.
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team with dedicated performance and application engineers, electronics engineers, and interface with product management on the technology roadmap and product requirements.
  • Support the system architect and mechanical design teams in making the right future-proof design choices based on solid acoustical engineering experience.
  • Define and interpret technical requirements and specifications for new/next-generation instruments and sub-systems. Review module design for acoustic sensitivity.
  • Analyze data from sensors and other components to assess or characterize performance, determine the root cause of noise, and adjust or design changes as necessary.
  • Coordinate with industry partners and selected customers.
  • Provide relevant technical documentation of electronic components.

What about my skills & competencies?

  • MSc in Acoustical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with focus on acoustical/vibrational noise analysis with 3-5 years of working experience or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or similar with a focus on acoustical/vibrational noise analysis.
  • Very good knowledge of acoustic engineering, mechanical vibration, signal processing, and statistical analysis.
  • Proficient in FEA and/or acoustic simulation software (e.g. COMSOL).
  • Proficient in CAD for designing/modeling/reviewing (e.g. CATIA, SolidWorks).
  • Acoustic and vibration measurement skills with experience in data analysis /signal processing methodologies.
  • Ability to quantify noise response relationship to a system’s excitation (motion, thermal, or other) to effectively guide design improvements.
  • Good communication skills, within the technical teams and with the system architect.
  • Good ability to work in an international and young organization.
  • Expertise in piezo technology, nanostages, and actuators is a plus.
